I am, by nature, a perfectionist.

But! In 2022 I bought a tiny, low quality blank notebook from Cardiff National Museum and included these 4 things on the first page:

• “Em’s Fieldnotes 1”

• A self portrait sketch

• Start (and eventually end) date

• A little intention - “a place to make mistakes and learn from them”

My fieldnotes have 4 rules:

1. Never rip out a page

2. Never make something with the intention of sharing it

3. Carry it always

4. If you’re sitting/standing still and not actively busy, draw!!

Forget a social media-tour worthy “sketchbook”.

Keep fieldnotes and become a scientist observing your own daily life!
